Less than 24 Hours

In less than 24 hours, I should will be done with my 4th marathon.  Woohoo!  We are leaving this afternoon for South Bend and will spend the afternoon doing packet pickup and checking out the course to figure out where my support staff/photographer/lovely wife will be during race.  After that we are going to the local Papa Vino’s for dinner with Kelly and Heidi and their respective families for some pre-race pasta.  Then it is off to bed early because the race starts at 6:00AM which means a suggested 4:00AM wakeup (dependent on how many snooze buttons I hit).

I have a secret goal for how I want to do, but I don’t want to jinx it, so you’ll just have to wait until the race report to see how I did.

Off to pack!

Planning to Train

I haven’t quite started my full time triathlon training yet, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t started thinking about it.  I have been doing bike and swim workouts for the past couple months, but nothing structured yet.  I figured that starting next week, after Sunburst, I will start on a dedicated triathlon training schedule.  In preparation for that, I picked up Matt Fitzgerald’s Essential Week to Week Training Guide from the library which is chalk full of training plans.  There are basically 10 different plans for each tri distance.  The 10 plans (or levels) range from beginner to advanced with different concentrations based on specific goals.  I think that I am going to try and follow a modified level 4 plan.  I am going to have to modify the plan because all of the plans are 20 week programs and I will only have 8.  Yikes!

Looking at the plan, I may be in fairly good shape to jump in at week 5 or 6 fairly easily.  While my workouts haven’t been exactly what the plan calls for, I am confident that I am at a level were I can bike at least an hour and a half 3 times a week, swim a mile 3 times a week and run more than 45 minutes at least 3 times a week.  So, what I think I will do is take the last 14 weeks of the plan and do every other week of the plan and then give myself 1 week as a taper.

My next goal that I would like to accomplish this week is to find a good way to track the training schedule.  While I have numerous way to track activities I have completed (SportTracks, Run Saturday, etc), I really don’t have a good way to track upcoming workouts.  The easiest (and low-tech) solution would be simply have a printout of the schedule.  However, the downside to this is that the workout as listed in the book is all in code.  For example, one day consists of: SWU3, SDS3, SBI7, SSI8, SKS3, SCD3, RSI8.  The S workouts are all different types of swim workouts and the RSI8 is a running speed intervals of 13 x 30 secs for 52 minutes total.  So, for each day, you have to refer back to the key to see what the workout actually is.  I have started developing a mini database that would allow be to enter each days workouts along with the reference table defining what each workout code means.  This way, I could possibly easily create a print out that has more details for each day rather than abbreviations.  I guess depending on whether or not I have enough time this week will determine whether I go with the high-tech or low-tech solution for my training schedule.

Finally Registered

I have finally registered from some of my planned tri’s for this summer.  I had about 5 or 6 that I was wanting to do, but hadn’t actually taken the plunge and signed up for any.  The big factor in my delay in signing up was figuring out whether or not I should sign up for Half Ironman.  Today, I convinced myself that I can be ready for it by August.  So, I have now signed up for the Grand Haven Tri on July 12th (Olympic Distance) Tri Del Sol on July 18th (Sprint Distance) and then the Steelhead 70.3 on August 1st (Half Ironman).  3 tri’s in 4 weeks sounds crazy, I know, but I am thinking that I will ease back on the Tri Del Sol and treat it as a test run for Steelhead.  It will give me a second chance to practice my transitions and doing all three activities in one day.

The other tri’s I am thinking of doing are the Millennium Tri and the Reeds Lake Tri.  The Millennium Tri is the weekend after Steelhead, so that one will be a last minute signup depending on how I feel afterwards.  It is a really short sprint (500m, 15mi, 5k), so it may be a good excuse to stretch the legs.  Once tri-season wraps up (living somewhere with a year-round warm season sounds really appealing right about now), I’ll focus more on running again with the hope of doing the Grand Rapids Marathon.  I’ve done the half marathon once and loved it; great course, great organization.

A Little of Everything

Today, despite the fact that I am supposed to be a on taper for Sunburst, I was able to do a little of everything.  The taper according to my training plan had the final two weeks going very light on activity which sort of drive me nuts.  It is hard to go from 40-50 miles a week down to 20-25 miles.  So, in order to follow the training plan, I have added a bit of extra biking and swimming to keep me active yet keep the impact to a minimum.

I started off this morning with a swim up at EGR.  I did 2500 yards for the first time in while; I usually only do 1800 yards so that I can get in and out in 30-35 minutes.  The 2500 yards took just under 50 minutes which included a short break to massage out a cramp in my calf.  It was actually first cramp I have gotten swimming.  I could feel it coming on about halfway through the workout, but it didn’t actually cramp up until about 2000 yards.  After massaging it out, I just had to be careful not to push off from the wall with that leg.

Later in the afternoon, I did my 4 mile run according to the training schedule.  It was very hot & humid at 3:30 when I went out, which was probably good prep for Sunburst as everyone has said that it can be very hot.  I finished in under 32 minutes, so sub 8 min miles.

Right after the run, I jumped on the bike to head to tutoring.  While not technically a workout, I like to use the short ride (6 miles each way) to Cascade and back as a chance to do a little speed work.  There are a couple of good sized hills each way which give me a chance to push it up each of them without worrying about tiring out.  I haven’t looked at the graphs of the ride yet, but I am guessing that I was pushing 20mph pace each way even with the hills.

On another note, I checked the website for Steelhead and there are still openings for the 70.3 in Benton Harbor.  I think that after the marathon I am going to have to seriously consider attempting the half IM this year rather than next.  I am confident that I am ready on the swim and run legs of the race, but I just need more bike mileage under my belt.  I’ll have to go out for a couple long rides after the marathon to see if I feel I can legitimately be ready for it, but I am thinking I very easily could be.

A Day Off For Extra Exercise

Today was Memorial Day (or Decoration Day if you want to be old school).  That means that Jennie and I got the day off of work.  After a completely relaxing day yesterday, we got a out a bit today to enjoy the weather.

I started the morning off with a bike ride through Cascade and Ada.  Just like my ride to Grand Haven, there was a pretty stiff wind – this time out of the East though.  Thankfully, this time I was going in a loop so I got to take advantage of the wind for half of the ride.  Despite the wind and hills, this turned out to be one of my best rides of the season.  I averaged 18.2mph over 27 miles (a 3:18 pace).

I started off by heading up to Reeds Lake and then swinging out to Cascade.  Then I headed up along the Thornapple River towards Ada.  I think this is actually the first time I have circled Cascade this way.  Usually, I head though Ada first and then end up in Cascade.  After going through Ada, I cruised up and down the hills on Fulton.  These are some of the toughest hills in Grand Rapids and also part of the Reeds Lake Triathlon, so they are good practice.

The Fulton hills start about 17 miles into the ride.

Shortly after the hills, I looked back and there was another rider behind me.  I am still unsure on what the proper etiquette is for passing and what not.  However, it really bugs me when some gets behind me and then doesn’t pass. I didn’t want to change up my pace because I was feeling pretty good and figured that if was able to catch up to me, he should be able to pass.  I did slow down a bit to take a glug of water and he still didn’t pass.  He eventually passed by me about 4 miles later and said “hi” as he went by.  I was expecting him to thank me for providing a draft for him…. grrrrr.  I finished the ride by circling Reeds Lake with another climb at the end.

After the bike ride and some lunch, Jennie and I loaded up the kayaks and took them up to Reeds Lake.  It was almost too windy to kayak and we got pretty wet because of all the waves.  The sailboats seemed to be enjoying the wind though.  It was a fairly short trip over to the turtle cove and then back, but fun nonetheless.

Finally, to cap off the day of exercise, I headed out for a 4 mile run with Jennie on the bike.  Despite the other activities of the day, I still managed 7:36 miles through East Grand Rapids.  Sunburst is less than 2 weeks away so my training schedule is pretty light for the next week.  I am hopefully going to supplement the lightened load with some extra swimming and biking.  That way, I give my legs a rest from the impact of running, but also keep up my cardio workout.
