Thursday Randomness

We had a great weekend last weekend.  My brother-in-law Brad came over to visit.  There was lots of leaf cleanup, football watching, some running, and a trip to the cider mill.

So many donuts…

Falling back an hour was nice for the extra hour of sleep.  However, I hate the lack of sunlight in the afternoon/evening. I guess that just means it is headlamp season now.

I ordered a new bike trainer.  However, it hasn’t arrived yet. I contacted the company I ordered it from only to find that despite ordering it on the 31st, it hasn’t shipped yet. The website lists it as “In Stock” but apparently that means nothing because they are waiting for more to come in.  Unacceptable. I’m calling tomorrow to see how they can expedite it otherwise I’m cancelling my order.

I finally finished a project! We now have a new coffee table and two new end tables. We previously had a set of Ikea tables, but they were starting to show their age and we needed an upgrade. I’m really happy with how they turned out.  Now I just need to finish our bar area… that I started last year… whoops!

Jason and I have declared November Anti-Captcha (word verification) Month. We are trying to rid the world of captcha one blog at a time.  Think you still need the word verification on your blog? Chances are you don’t.  If you are on Blogger, the captcha was probably turned on default because in the past, Blogger did not have good SPAM filtering.  That has since changed rendering the word verification useless and simply a pain in the butt.

I started a strength/core program a few weeks ago. I’ve basically combined the Hundred Pushups, Two Hundred Situps, Two Hundred Squats, and Fifty Pullups workouts into a circuit workout.  If you are interested in joining in on the fun, check out this Google Docs spreadsheet with all the details.

I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately – thank you Netflix!

  • The Adjustment Bureau (Pretty good, intense, but easy to follow)
  • Horrible Bosses (Crude, but funny)
  • Hall Pass (Again, crude but hilarious)
  • Everything Must Go (Disappointing for a Will Ferrell movie)
  • Captain America (I’m always a sucker for a decent comic book to movie adaptation)
  • Bridesmaids (Laughed maybe once. For all the hype, it was disappointing)
  • Limitless (Good, not great)
  • Knight and Day (Horrible. A train wreck from beginning to end. Tom Cruise, please stop “acting”)
  • True Grit (Loved it. Harsh, unforgiving, but still had some moments of humor)
  • X-Men: First Class (Really enjoyed it. See above about comic book adaptations)

Now that the heat is on, Bailey has discovered the heat register in my office.  See that tiny white spot next to his back? Yep, that is the only piece of the register cover visible when the heat kicks on.

(BTW – He really isn’t possessed. The iPhone flash reflects weird in his eyes)

When he isn’t hogging my heat, he pretty much just lays around sleeping.  Either that or he just sits looking out the window keeping an eye on the neighborhood.  What a life. Makes me jealous most some of the time.

I bring a Ziploc bag to the pool with me every time I swim.  It contains my pool id and copy of whatever workout I am going to do.  I kept adding each workout to the bag without removing the old ones. I decided to clean the bag out and had quite an impressive stack of old workouts.  I’m thinking of taking them all and treating them as a grab bag.  Just reach in, pull one out and that will be the swim workout for the day.

Thanks for reading! And thanks to everyone for their offers for spring marathons! So far, the offers have been The National Marathon, Glass City, and The Woodlands Marathon.

    Will Tebowing just gooooooo away!!!!

I would ask for a free spinerval, trainer mat, and bike thong (sexy, sexy), the fancy one that holds the remote and food for the wait. They should know the triathletes dont like to wait for anything

    I like the new tables

I do the same thing with my swim workuts

Isn’t waiting for stuff to ship SOOOO frustrating? I hope you get your trainer soon. I was just talking to Jenn about getting another one so we can both ride at the same time.

The coffee table and end tables look AMAZING! Did you build those? Nice work! They look like they are super strong and well made. Nice work!

I kinda missed Bailey after seeing those pics. He’s such a cute pup, and he’s a smart one too to find the heat! Maglee will lay anywhere that the sun is shining in the windows. She LOVES the warmth.

That stack of swim workouts shows that you really put in the hours for IM training. Way to go! You’re the man.

Oh yeah, and I HATE CAPTCHA too! They are so frustrating…especially when I think that I have posted a comment and close the window just to realize that I forgot to enter the captcha. I’m totally on the November Anti-Captcha campaign with you.

That workout that you posted on Google Docs looks pretty sweet! I really should do something like that right now. After packing on a few pounds since August, I’m back on the weight train going down. Actually, we should somehow create a competition that everyone can access on Google docs where we have to do certain things. Maybe a prize for the winner?

I changed things up with the trainer. Canceled the first order and reordered from a place I have done business with before that is located in Ann Arbor. Hopefully that speeds up the process. The trainer I currently have is going back to Jennie (it is technically hers in the first place) so that we can ride together. For $80 (http://www.amazon.com/Bell-Motivator-Indoor-Bicycle-Trainer/dp/B000AAYBWS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320973944&sr=8-1) it is decent trainer and has lasted plenty of miles. Otherwise, keep an eye on Craigslist and you might find a good deal.

I know how you feel about captcha. I’ve done the same thing where I thought I commented but failed the captcha and closed the window.

The strength workouts are sure kicking my butt. My abs were killing me today for the situps/crunches. Have you done a series of P90X yet? They now have P90X2 available for pre-order: http://www.beachbody.com/product/p90x2-workout-the-next-p90x.do. That may be next on the to-do list.

Ok. Ok. I hate word verification too but truth be told I loath these enter all your freaking info things too. Sorry. I’m honest. 😉
Love the apple. Love the house. Love the trees you killed in writing 144 notes.

    1. Ironman By Thirty (Kevin)

Thanks for the honesty! Just out of curiosity, what don’t you like, the process of entering your info or having all your info potentially exposed?? In theory, now that you have commented, as long as you comment from the same computer/browser in the future, it should pre-populate the comment form with your data and you won’t have to enter anything. I had some problems with this working in the past but MattyO called me out on it and it should be working now.

  7. Heather O

I love that you invited your brother-in-law over to help with leaf cleanup! I will have to enforce that rule next time I invite my brother over!

Nice job on the coffee and end tables! They look really professional! Should I put my order in now?

Ahh to live the life of a dog! I try to get Frankie to trade places with me and go to work for me so I can sleep in his cage all day, but no dice. I guess sleeping all day is one of life’s finest gifts!

Oh, and I removed my word verification. Actually I didn’t even know it was on because it doesn’t make the author do it when they comment on their own blog. Fail! Sorry about that.

I think we are doing Glass City again (full for both of us)….unless something more attractive comes along.

Of course my brother in law showed up as I was dragging the last of the yard waste bags to the curb. Good luck enforcing the rule with your brother 🙂

Of course you can put your order in for coffee tables. Just put it in with the guy who is probably sitting in the same room as you now 😉

And THANK YOU for removing the word verification!

  8. Matt Oravec

OHHH LOOK AT THIS! All of my information is on the comment thingy! WOOHOO!

Love the tables, I know NOTHING about not finishing projects… seriously… I finish everything I sta… oooo shiny objects 🙂

I hate swimming. I wrote my workouts on my hand, the gauge of workouts was whether or not the ink bled off during the workout 🙂

What is the whole Tebowing thing?!?! damn, I am soooo out of the loop!

Woohoo! I didn’t piss off MattyO today! That makes for a good day in my book.

Yeah… about the tables… I technically started them back in February when I broke my toe. I thought I would have extra time then because I wasn’t running. Ended up biking and swimming more and as far as I got was ripping down the sheets of MDF to smaller pieces. I don’t get distracted by shiny objects. I just like to avoid the painting.

Actually, project related, I seem to remember you having an air compressor in the background of the pictures you posted when you built the Chicken Mahal. I meant to ask you then, but forgot. What kind do you have? Is it powerful enough for a framing nailer and do you have one for it? I ask because I just have a small pancake compressor with brad nailer. It was cheap and I love it. I actually have it rigged up so that I can blow out our sprinklers with it every fall. So, figuring I’ve saved at least $50 a year from paying a pro, it has already paid for itself twice over. Any ways, I’m thinking that it will probably need to be upgraded soon, so I’m looking into what would be better/more powerful (insert Tim the Toolman Taylor grunting here).

Tebowing: http://www.tebowing.com It is the new form of “planking”. Totally stupid and pointless.

You know that is BS about the trainer. Cancel it and go pick one up at Performance Bikes – they have the KK’s on the sales floor. So does REI.

    Your dog is awesome!

We thought about turning the heat on a few nights ago when it got down to 40 degrees. Broke out the flannel sheets instead. I want to get through the entire winter without using the heat, just to help offset the amount of A/C used this summer.

Nice work on the end tables and coffee table – amazing how productive you can be when not training 20hrs a week, huh?

Closest Performance Bike store is on the other side of the state. And the LBS’s around here about $100 more than the price online. I ended up canceling the order and reordering on Tree Fort Bikes. I’ve ordered from them before and since they are in Ann Arbor, MI, even if I pick the cheapest shipping option, it should arrive in a day or two after it ships. Best part is they do guaranteeed price matching. Should have just gone with them in the first place.

We are just the opposite of you. We kept the AC off all summer, but can’t survive without the heat. You’d probably die if you came here. Even in the dead of winter, the highest the thermostat goes is 68* and is only 60* during the day when I am the only one here. All of my computer equipment in my office keeps that room nice and warm though.

Sorta a dark drama, but the premise is kinda cool and the movie wasn’t that bad, called “The Robber”…..basically a marathon runner who needs more adrenaline from robbing banks. Its a good trainer movie:

I’ll have to check it out. The first thing that came to mind was the craptacular Crank with Jason Statham, but after reading the synopsis on Netflix, it sounds like it actually has potential.

Just to prioritize, my Jon To Do List is now: Breaking Bad, World War Z, The Robber.

  15. Colleen

That puppy of yours is just too darn cute! 🙂

Okay, okay I’ll turn off word verification. BUT, if I get a million comments written in Chinese, I’m coming to you and turning it back on!

Those tables turned out awesome. We might be hiring you when we move…

  16. Aimee (I Tri To Be Me)

I LOVE your coffee table and end tables! Nice work!!

Thanks for the movie reviews. I’ll admit that for someone who considers herself a movie buff, I have only seen one of those movies on the list—True Grit, which I really, really enjoyed. Excellent movie. Love the Cohen brothers. By the way, did you see No Country for Old Men? If you haven’t, then I strongly recommend it…but there is nothing about the movie that will make you feel good, except for an appreciation of the art of film. Truly well done. (and now I will NOT be watching Bridesmaids, as I had intended to this weekend).

    1. That’s one BIG apple!
    2. Your dog cracks me up. He actually looks like you caught him doing something he wasn’t supposed to be doing when he was sitting on your heat register
    3. I’m like @JeffIrvin – when the lows go into the 40’s here in FL we turn the heat on. My wife is constantly cold, so the heat is on, she sleeps w/ four blankets and flannels, etc. Meanwhile I’m practically nude and sweaty (yes, bad mental image, I know)

  20. Mandy

That is a freaking huge apple.

    Catchas suck.

Do the Sugarloaf Marathon in May! 🙂

Completely LOVE LOVE LOVE the Bailey pictures. It is hilarious that he loves the heat that much. Porter is just the opposite . He lays by the door where I have a draft blocker. He kicks it out of the way and lays against it to feel the cool air coming in.
