Mother Nature You Are An Evil Temptress

Seriously, make up your mind, is it Spring or not?  If not, that’s cool (not really), but I’ll deal with it.  Just quit this wishy washy crap.  Today we had rain, snow, thunder, lightning, hail, and more rain.  What the hell?  It’s April!

Yesterday, I had a great bike ride.  The weather was “eh”.  Not great, but not as bad as today.  I had a 2.5 hour ride scheduled and my goal was to find some hills.  I am on a quest to find some good hilly routes that will get me ready for the hills of Madison.  I have been getting some awesome advice from Kristin, a two-time (soon to be three-time) IMWI veteran.  I am a still a little nervous about the bike course, she has given me some great training/course tips and has helped put my mind at ease.

Cycling 4-2-2011, Elevation - Time

The course I did had some challenging hills.  It was actually part of a course I used to run in high school for cross country.  I can’t believe I used to run up these hills. I had intended on doing the hills twice, but somehow missed the turn back to do the loop again.  When I got home, I realized that the road I was looking for changed names which is why I missed it.  Oh well, I’ll be back to ride them again. 

For nutrition, I had one bottle of water and one of Gatorade and a package of Gu chomps.  I took water or Gatorade every 15 minutes and had half of the chomps at an hour in and the second half at 1:45.  This was the first time I had the chomps and I definitely like them better than regular old Gu.  The only problem is that because it was so cold out, I felt like was chewing them in slow motion because my mouth/jaw was frozen.

Towards the end of the ride, I had to deal with some freezing rain, but not enough to be much of a bother.  It was the wind that was biggest problem.  My feet never really warmed up no matter what I did.

Despite the weather, it was a very good ride.  I was comfortable on the bike the whole time which I attribute to spending so much time on the trainer this winter.  Once this weather starts to cooperate, I think I am going to have some great long rides this summer.

Today, I made the mistake of going on my long run this morning without paying too much heed to the forecast.  I had been outside to let the dog out and it didn’t feel that cold.  So, I threw on some shorts and a short sleeve shirt and head out on an 8 mile run.  By mile one, I realized my clothing choice was not at all optimal.  I could feel the temperature dropping.  And then is started raining.  And then snowing.  I was FREEZING.  The only silver lining was that at the halfway point, I turned around the wind was mostly at my back.  But at that point, I was soaked through and through.

By the time I got home, I was beet red (from the cold and wind) and shivering like an abandoned puppy.  Thankfully Jennie took good care of me and got me a towel and made me some hot chocolate.  I eventually warmed up but learned my lesson – always check the forecast before heading out.

After warming up, I got ready for my second workout of the day, a swim.  Jennie came with me and went to the grocery store while I swam.  It worked out perfectly because when I was done swimming she was ready to check out.

The run and swim wrapped up the first official week of training.  It went very well and spirits are still high.  Bring it on week 2!

And finally, if you think your life is hard, you are wrong.  Your life doesn’t include having to lay around deciding on which of a half dozen toys to play with.  Now that would be a hard life.  Enjoy.

    We had tons of crap the last few days in terms of weather too. It’s like “just make up your mind”. Today it was sunny as could be and raining at the same time. Really? 🙂

    I had the same issue today. When I went out I thought I over dressed and then by mile 3 I was freezing. ITS APRIL KEVIN.. APRIL I want some 40’s PLZ!!!

    Man, that graph looks like you were in the Tour de France with all those jagged climbs. I’m glad you could find some hills. I’ve been wanting to try to Gu Chomps for awhile, and I’ll have to get some since they seemed like a good thing for you. Nice work on Week 1!

    Bailey is hilarious. Maglee tries to play with multiple toys at once too.

    where do you get your chart from? a more impressive ride than i would ever have. not to mention i’m a wuss about going out in 55 degrees. today we have a high of 85 or so…

    i’m assuming that’s a video, but it’s just showing up as a white space for me. stupid websense.

      The chart came from SportTracks – http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/sporttracks/. In my opinion, the best tracking/logging software I have found. Works great with Garmin devices. There is a limited free version, but I actually sprung from the full version and it was worth it to be able to track multiple pieces of equipment.     Bailey is getting so big!! I LOVE that video, Jon’s description of his thought process was 100% spot on!

    The weather sucks. That is all I have to say about that.

    For your feet. Pearl Izumi Barrier Boots. I love them. My feet are always warm. Even in Maine.

      That’s OK. I figured you’d skip straight to the video. If all I have to do is post a Bailey video every once in a while to keep you coming back, that’s what I’ll do. Why do you think I look forward to Monday’s on your blog?? 🙂

      I’ll have to check out the Pearl Izumi boots. I have these Specialized ones http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCEqProduct.jsp?spid=49983 and they usually work pretty well. It is the wind that does them in though. In the past, I have put on socks, then plastic grocery bags, then shoes, then booties. It looks really classy and it works wonders at breaking the wind and keeping the feet dry if it is wet/rainy out.

    I think Mother Nature is spying on me, as I walked to my car to goto work, I said “wow, this is good cycling weather” 30 mins later its pouring, HAHA MOTHER NATURE, I already planned on indoor training today, I TRICKED YOU AND YOU WASTED YOUR BIKE RUINING RAIN!!!! TAKE THAT!!!

    Listen, you think it’s easy being a dog? Did you see Bailey trying to play with EVERY toy at once? Let’s see you try to do that? Can’t do it can ya? haha. Sophie does that, keeps trying to get 2 toys at once.

    Man, the weather is honestly a joke already. I never took my bike of the trainer, I don’t plan on it until may either… I am not screwing around with this getting my hopes up crap haha.

    Hills… WOWZERS man. YOU RAN THOSE? That is what I call an EVIL route. Way to punish it!

      Yeah, I still can’t believe we ran those in high school. We had an absolutely amazing coach my freshman and sophomore year. I’ll have to do a full post about him someday because he is one of the reasons I got into running. Basically he was a 4 sport athlete in highschool with multiple scholarships waiting for him, but paralyzed (neck down) in a diving accident after his senior year. Despite his hardships, he went on to become one of the best pole vaulting and cross country coaches in the state. He worked us into the ground and we were all better runners because of it. Sadly, he passed away to complications of his paralysis after my sophomore year, but I may have ever become a runner without him.

    If you get a chance to actually bike the Ironman course, do it. It’s like 8 hours round trip for me, but I did it twice – even as a day trip once. Being able to bike the real course was incredibly helpful for the day of.

      At least our future children will grow up with videos instead of MS Paint drawings of them 😛 haha

      I think the playing yesterday completely wore him out because all he did today was sleep. It was a nice change.

    Like Mandy, I watched the video first. Totally cracked up at how Bailey watched the Kong roll around the floor like she was deciding when the right time to pounce on it was! At least it was toys, and not your couch or table that she was chewing!

    I can’t say I envy you for running in those conditions! And I think it’s bad when the temp is below 60!

    Last Friday it snowed. Yesterday it was 78 degrees. Today it is 60 and raining. Tomorrow…55 and tornado watch.
