Thursday Ramblings

  • Well, it has happened.  We got our first snow of the season.  Not much, but enough to cover the ground and bring traffic to a screeching halt.  I actually don’t might the cold and snow, so you won’t hear me complaining about too much.  There is something soothing about hearing the crunch of the snow under foot on a crisp winter morning.
  • With the snow it means no more biking outside – at least on the road bike, I may try and take the mountain bike out a bit.  So, it doesn’t look like I am going make it past my December 9th record of last year.  Oh well.  I am digging my trainer rides so far.  After experimenting with Mario Kart, I have moved onto greener pastures and started playing Mario Tennis and Goldeneye on N64.  I played through a Mario Tennis tournament and suddenly 40 minutes of my ride were over and done with.  I found that my aero bars were made for the N64.

  • I think I am finally getting over my cold.  Oh, by the way, did I mention I have been fighting a cold?  I don’t think I did because I have been in denial about actually being sick.  It was the most annoying cold.  I was stuffed up, had a sore throat, cough, and was hacking up crap all week.  I still have a lingering cough, but I am just about 100% now.
  • I’m hesitant to mention our Christmas lights again after the crap I got last time for putting them up too early.  For the record, I may put them up early, but we just turned them on for the first time this week.  It is much more fun to hang the lights while it is warm rather than trudging around in the snow and cold.  Anyways, the 2nd night we plugged in the lights, half of the lights didn’t come on.  I finally had a chance this afternoon to investigate the problem and here is what I found:

  • The damn rabbits chewed through all three wires of one of the strands.  Bunnies – you are welcome to live under our deck, but consider this your warning.  Continue to chew through our wires and you might end up in a nice winter stew*.
  • I don’t think I ever officially thanked everyone for their help on getting my bike fixed, so Thank You!  Both Jon and BDD nailed the issue on the head – hub related.  I took the wheel into Grand Rapids Bicycle Company after calling them. I worked with the mechanic and he helped me remove the freehub. Once removed, he said that it definitely had some play to it and was in need of eventual replacement. That said, we were able to completely clean out the freehub and lubricate it. After doing that, the noise has pretty much completely disappeared. I will eventually need to replace the entire hub if it gets worse, but I should be good for a while. I’ve broken a couple spokes in the last couple months as well and he recommended re-lacing the wheel if they continue to break as it is a sign of fatigue. I figure that I will keep an eye on the spokes and do the hub at the same time. The best part – the LBS didn’t charge me a penny! He basically let me into the shop, access to the tools, and assisted me for free. I was shocked and thoroughly impressed.
  • My swim times are really improving this season.  I did a 10×100 workout at the pool on Wednesday and managed sub-1:30 for all 10.  Even the woman I swim next to (a former collegiate swimmer) has commented on my improvement.  Well, I think it was a compliment, “I think I only lapped you once during my workout today.” haha.  I think that swimming next to a stronger swimmer is one of the best ways to push myself harder.
  • Tomorrow night is the Michael Buble concert.  I have been listening to the CDs this past week while working to brush on his songs.  My brother is actually working the load-in and load-out (fancy words for setup and teardown) of the event, so we might actually see him there.  I asked if he could get us backstage to meet Michael, but he doubts he will even see him.  Damn. Worth a try though!

And finally, good luck to both MattyO, Jeff, and his wife Annie in their half marathons this weekend!

Thanks for reading!

*I’m kidding PITA.  Besides my bunny loving wife would never allow this to happen.

Sweet setup with the controller on the extensions – almost like it was made for that purpose?

That little * would not be included in my post if rabbits ate through my lights!

That is some fast sets in the pool Kevin good for you that all the hard work is paying off.

…And I don’t even know what a Michael Buble is? Have fun at this dudes concert though.

    Thanks for the shout out!

Okay just asked my wife who this Buble character was and first she told me how to pronounce his name and then told me I was an idiot?

I’m seriously laughing my ass off right now!!! haha. This comment made my night!

Michael Buble is more my wife’s cup of tea than mine, but I enjoy some of his songs. I definitely won’t be shouting “I love you Michael!!” like some of the fans. The last time he came to Grand Rapids, he went out into the audience and hugged a woman who promptly grabbed his ass.

If the rabbits continue to be a problem, perhaps you can come and visit and do some “population control.” Oh wait… it is probably too cold here for you! :-P

it’s actually PETA, isn’t it? or did you mean to call them a “P.I.T.A.”, cause that one applies too a lot of the time. :)

so these trainer rides. i know you probably have a bike computer that tells you your effort/results where as i just spin blindly, but does it feel easier or harder than outside? i feel like if i were playing games i would ease up on effort b/c i was distracted by the game, haha.

you are fine now that we all know you just put them up but did not turn them on. had you disclosed that in the first place, you wouldn’t have gotten hassled…

Haha. PETA, PITA, what’s the difference. I meant PETA. That is what I get for posting before bed.

As for the trainer rides, you think too much of me. No fancy gadgets for me. I was actually going to have a bullet point seeking advice on how to best measure trainer time but my brain wasn’t working (see above) last night and I couldn’t figure out how to word my question. I generally just adjust the resistance so that that my MPH (measured with a basic Cateye bike computer) matches what I usually do on the road. I’m not sure which is best, going easier than on the road or upping the resistance and making it harder on the legs. I am assuming the later though.

I think the best gadget to measure this would be a power meter ($$$). That would give you a measurement of watts that determines how much effort you are using.

As for easing up, I felt I did that more with Mario Kart where the game was based on speed. It worked both ways, the faster the Kart, the faster I pedaled. But if I crashed my cadence slowed too. Tennis seemed to work better for consistent pedaling.

What?! you can’t just get a bike computer, you have to get a $$$ one too? I don’t know if i can get fully-into biking. I don’t like making big financial commitments. ;)

Alright I am demanding a retraction of your retraction. Bunnies are worthless! Shocked that they actually ate through your cords, WTF???

Kinda jealous about the Buble concert. I have learned he is a pompous asshole though and that he thinks his shit doesn’t stink which has changed my opinion slightly on his music… BUT, I still have his cds and I still sing along haha.

Dude, solid swim times! I won’t be able to even see you in any of the triathlons anymore!

Jealous on the N64 holster… gonna have to see if my bars are spaced close enough, I think I have them too far apart to make that a perfect fit :( Clever none the less. I would be all over goldeneye if I hooked up that baby!

  5. Morgan

Too funny about the bunnies! (Hey that rhymed!) :)

Congrats on improving swim and distracting yourself during training rides too. LOL!

I would love to go to a Michael Buble concert! (I hope you read that in the girliest voice possible!)

    Have a wonderful weekend!!!

  6. MyLife&Running

I’ve been wondering how I’m going to make it through my first winter on a trainer… I think it’s hilarious that you can play Nintendo while getting the workout DONE!

  7. Mandy

Solid swim times. I am a slooooowwww swimmer. I want to swim like you when I grow up.

LOVE that you play Nintendo on the trainer, I mix it up with DVR’d shows and DVDs.

    Mmmm Bunny stew!!

    Have fun at the concert!

  8. Jon

That is too funny with the N64 and the aerobars and the rabbits. I like Mandy’s suggestion: STEW!

I swim with a guy who is ex collegiate as well. He can gauge his “out of shape” or “in shape” fitness based upon when he catches me during long sets. I take pride in the fact that it only took him 100 yards instead of 50 to lap me :)

  9. BDD

Buble sounds like a girl singing!!!
