A Year in Review

Another year of running down is almost in the past.  On top of running, I added biking and swimming into the mix for my regular training schedule.  The most helpful addition to my training this year, however, was the Garmin Forerunner 405 from my wonderful wife.  The Garmin forces me to time/track all of my bike and running workouts which was something I was was lax at before.  I still haven’t found a great solution for tracking swim workouts, but I am thinking that something like SportCount Lap Ring might work.

Goals (New Year’s Resolutions)

For running, I’d like to get my average pace down below 8:00 min miles, which shouldn’t be too hard judging by the fact that I am at 8:01 currently.  Ideally, I’d love to get down to 7:45, but would settle for 7:50.  I’d also like to finally break 2:00:00 at the River Bank Run.  This year’s time was 2:01:06, so that means I would just have to knock about 5 seconds off each mile.  I’ll be training for the Sunburst Marathon at the same time as River Bank, so hopefully the additional miles will help bring down my time.

As for swimming, I hope to keep up the 3 times a week training that I started in July this past year.  I really don’t have too many metrics from this year other than total distance.  So, my goal for this year is to improve my tracking.  I’d also like to start doing more workouts rather than just swimming a specific distance.  Workouts in a Binder: Swim Workouts for Triathletes, which I got for Christmas, should help provide some ideas on what these workouts should entail.

Finally, for biking, I am hoping to get a new bike this year.  While I am mostly happy with the 30-year old bike I have now, it is too big for me.  I’m thinking that a new bike will not only improve my comfort, but also my times.  Other than that, I would like to bring my times downs a bit.  Not really sure what a good goal should be though because I am still getting used to bike training.
